One Week Challenge {Week 4}: Farmhouse Desk Makeover

Happy almost-Thursday friends!

In two weeks the big Spring ORC Reveal day will be upon us!! That means I have 2 weeks left to cross off every detail on my outrageously long to-do list! But, my friends, we’ve done it before and whether we work till the early morning hours or not, we’ll get there!

In case you’re wondering what the ORC is, you can read all about it in my Week 1 post! That post is such a fun one because I shared some pretty inspiration and the direction we’re heading in our Farmhouse Office Makeover. Week 2 was kinda sorta unproductive because we got our first ever family pet and week 3 was about finding some very essential pieces for our office.

Now that we have a new light installed and my desk repainted, I am SO excited to see this room come together. I will admit that this room has been the place where all the junk gets thrown these past few months since we moved back into our home.

If there’s one thing I’d love to tell my readers today it’s about the power of paint. I know, I know… that’s nothing new! But I want you to know if you’re on a tight budget (like me!!), keep your eyes open at garage sales, thrift stores, the Re-store, and any other second hand stores and grab those neglected or old pieces that you can redo. Last week I showed you this desk I found at my local thrift store…

It is such a solid piece of furniture and I’m soo glad I grabbed it. Let me show you it’s “new look”!!

The first thing I did, as I do with anything that I paint, was give it a really good wash/wipedown. This had quite a few cobwebs and dust in the crevices and needed a good cleaning.

It was snowing/raining outside so my sweet husband offered to sand the desk for me. Since I was using chalkpaint, it’s not necessary to completely sand it down but this desk had lots of caked on grubbish and needed to be sanded on the top and sides. After wiping it down, I was ready to paint!

The paint I used was Country Chic’s Hula Hoop. This color is part of Country Chic’s limited spring/summer color so if you like this beautiful subtle grey color be sure to get it before it’s unavailable! I was contemplating painting it white, but so glad I decided on this grey! (If you want to see some other DIY’s I’ve painted with Country Chic, check out our coffee table, ladder, night stand and hall table, all painted with this paint!)

I am also loving this beautiful light my husband installed. It’s exactly the style I was looking for and I love the farmhouse vibe it brings to our office! I browsed every online site and local stores as well, and couldn’t find exactly what I liked. So during one of our million runs to Home Depot, we came across this one!

And how pretty is that door? We used to have a colonial door in here with a glass insert… I was SO happy to get rid of it and love these gorgeous doors by Masonite!

After letting the paint dry completely I applied a coat of Tough Coat on the entire surface of my desk. This product is designed to provide protection to your furniture and is scratch resistant. Even though I have every intention of not setting a nice cold glass of lemonade on this desk surface, accidents do happen and I’m glad this product provides that extra piece of mind that my furniture is protected.

Guess what my weekend plans include?? I’ve got some exciting plans in the works… and one little hint! That beautiful board and batten is actually not part of our office! I had to photograph my desk in our living room because our office walls are getting some “character” added to them! Can’t wait to show y’all!!

  • Paint walls
  • Change glass colonial door
  • Find desk at a thrift or garage sale and repaint
  • Buy chair
  • Reupholster footstool
  • Organize all my craft supplies in a functional (and pretty!) way
  • Add a rug
  • Paint current blinds or buy new ones if budget allows
  • Add shiplap
  • Redo a buffet we already have and use it to organize
  • Décor
  • Change light fixture

A huge thank-you to Country Chic paint for being a sponsor of my ORC!! All opinions of their amazing paint are completely my own!

Thank you so much for stopping by today, friends!

I love how your desk came out — it’s GORGEOUS! Did you also do the fantastic wall treatment behind the desk? I’d love to add something like that to my home.

Thanks so much, Lauren! Yes, my husband did the board and batten! It’s probably one of the most cost-effective ways to add character to a home! I’ll have to share about it soon. Thanks for stopping by! xo

What an improvement! Gray is one of my favorite go to colors for furniture and the handles look so much better against the painted backdrop. Can’t wait to see how you update your walls….I’ve always been in love with those board and batten ones you have.
