DIY Cupboard Door Turned Chalkboard Frame

Happy Sunday Everyone!

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am that summer holidays are here! School was just done on Friday and I feel like a little switch in my head just switched to relax and no-routine mode! I love it!!!!

Today I want to show you a chalkboard I made for less than $5! I love visiting the Habitat for Humanity Restore. You just never know what you’ll find, plus you’re supporting a great cause. A little while back I found these new, cabinet doors. There were different sizes and they were all $2 or $3 dollars. I bought three, thinking they’d be perfect for a number of different projects!

IMG_1070

So pretty, isn’t it?

The only materials I used were: 1 cupboard door, Folk Art Chalkboard paint (from Michaels), 1 foam paint brush (from Dollar Store or Michaels), and Frogtape (from Home Depot).

Because they were new, the doors were in perfect shape and since I didn’t mind the color I didn’t need to paint the frame. Easy, peasy, right? The first thing I did was use Frogtape (that stuff is the best!!) to tape the inside so my chalkpaint wouldn’t run to the outside of the frame.

IMG_9910

I gave the frame 3 coats of chalkpaint. (Follow drying instruction on paint bottle). I love painting with chalk paint! It goes on so nicely and a little goes a long way!

IMG_1068

I love how they turned out! I have the one pictured above on our back deck! It looks so summery as it reminds us of some of our favourite things to do this season!

IMG_1074

I look forward to changing it up as the seasons come and go! Have you ever used cupboard doors to make something else?

As always, thank you so much for stopping by! I love hearing from you and appreciate your comments so much! Hope you have a very wonderful week!

Knock-off West Elm Spheres

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend!

I’m so excited to share a super easy and quick project with you today! I’ve been noticing spheres everywhere lately…. home décor, stores, while “touring” homes online, etc. And I love them! Although I don’t like their price tag very much… heehee! Right away, I noticed the style I liked the best, seemed to be one I could try and recreate! So happy with the end result an I’d love to share the tutorial with you!

IMG_0798 The ones I really liked can be found online at West Elm . Here is what you’ll need to create my version:

* 2 sets of 7inch wooden embroidery hoops (bought with 40% off coupon at Michaels for $1.49 each set

* paint or stain of your choice; you’ll need very little (already had on hand)

* tacks (already had on hand)

First, I unscrewed the little screw that holds the hoop in place.

IMG_0793

Our daughter had fun helping me paint them!

IMG_0795

I gave them two coats of paint. I then played around with them until I had the style I liked. I would’ve liked to unscrew the little clasp thingys (not sure what they are called), but that’s what holds the loop together and I didn’t want to start gluing them so I just left them and I actually like the look of them! I did use thumb tacks to hold the ends in place.

IMG_0806

These are so super easy to make! The big one at West Elm costs$29 and mine came to a total of $3!!! I love a knock-off deal like that!

IMG_0797

Hope you have a great week and thank you so much for stopping by,

End Table Makeover

I’m so excited to show you my End Table Makeover today!! I love how they turned out.

IMG_0774

Last summer I rescued a set of them from our garage sale site. They were pretty banged up but I loved the size and style of them and immediately said yes, I’ll take them! I envisioned putting a basket on the bottom for magazines or books and stuff.

Here is what they looked like before…

IMG_5139

Yes, they needed some serious TLC! The first things I did were, removing the piece of wood on the back, as it was pretty rotten. I also removed the wooden handle. I am loving glass knobs lately and could add them to all of our furniture! heehee! Take a peek at our dresser makeover here and see the pretty glass hardware!

IMG_5141

The color I chose is Baby Aqua from Cloverdale paint. I have loved turquoise forever it seems. When I was a teenager growing up, my mom spray painted anything and everything in my room for me (and that was before Pinterest and the whole spray painting craze!!!!). I had turquoise lamps, picture frames, my wall unit, light switch plate, bedding, etc… ok, you get the idea! I still love turquoise, but didn’t want the end tables too dark. They are going in our family room in the basement and I wanted something to brighten up the space!

First, I gave them two coats of Primer and they looked better already…

IMG_0572

And then two coats of Baby Aqua…

IMG_0576

I picked up 2 pieces of MDF boards from Home Depot for the back. They are super cheap… something like $1.50 each. After my husband cut to the right size, I covered them with some Hallmark wrapping paper I picked up from Walmart :)

IMG_0579

My husband then used a nail gun to fasten them to the back of the end tables.

IMG_0586

Here is what they look like with the paper attached…

IMG_0762

And just another shot…

IMG_0778

If they were a little bigger, I’d keep them in our living room because I love how they turned out soo much!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Camping Birthday Party

Happy Wednesday everyone!

It’s that time of year again…. time to start planning and booking some of our favorite campgrounds. Our family loves, loves to camp. My husband and I started going camping as soon as we were married and our love for sleeping under the stars has been passed on to our little ones. We love to get in the country and to our favorite provincial and national parks and just camp!

So, when we were planning our son’s birthday party a couple of months ago (yes, there was snow on the ground) he wanted a camping themed party. And I thought, why not? The ideas for this theme could be endless if the party was outside especially, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me! We brought the theme inside and had lots of fun! Just let your imagination go. I’d love to share some of the things I created and maybe it would inspire you to throw a camp-themed party!

IMG_9976

Here are the invitations our little guy handed out.

IMG_0758

“Creek Water” quenched everyone’s thirst after an afternoon of fun and games :)

IMG_0017

Hotdog was the natural choice of food for a camping themed party. Who doesn’t enjoy roasting hot dogs beside a fire? Our other “Grub” was Hashbrown Casserole, Baked Beans, Veggies and Dip and lots of other treats!

IMG_0016

Recycled tin cans were perfect for storing cutlery in!

IMG_9972

I just removed the labels from canned fruit and it was such a fun way to serve it in

IMG_9968

Some more treats….

IMG_9983

IMG_9985

Here is a picture of the cake we had to celebrate our little guy’s 7th birthday. He absolutely loved it!! I am by no means a cake decorator but I’m quite famous for brainstorming what cake I want and then presenting the idea to ….. who else?? My husband!! He has never disappointed us yet! I love the little details on this one!

IMG_9986

I didn’t get many pictures of the games we played as I was too busy helping out and organizing and having fun too, of course! But here is a picture of the campfire I drew and colored. We played “Pin the Marshmallow on the Campfire”.

IMG_0013

I also found these fun Bingo Cards from Christina at Inspiration for Celebration. Our little ones have the world’s largest a huge collection of stones so we used them for bingo chips.

IMG_9963

It was also fun to make up some thank-you gifts for all the little happy campers that came to party with us! I found these “snakes” at Michaels that grow into life-sized snakes. I’ll admit it…. I am totally scared of snakes and each time I went into our bathroom and saw this snake in the bathtub it freaked me out a little! But they were a big hit with the boys especially!

IMG_0001

It was such a fun afternoon! Whether you have little ones that love to camp or even an adult that loves the great outdoors, this is such a fun theme to celebrate someone! Hope you found some inspiration through this post. If you have any questions, please leave me a comment! I love hearing from my readers.

IMG_0026

Hope you all have a great day!

Until next time,

Kendra

Week 6: Final Reveal

I am so excited to share this post with you! It is week 6 of the One Room Challenge and it is time to do the final reveal! I can honestly say all our hard work, late nights, one million twelve trips to Home Depot and sweat has paid off!!

I. Love. Our. “New”. Master. Bedroom.

It is everything I hoped for…. I know I’ve said this before, but this was supposed to be my summer holidays project. And here we are, only at the beginning of May and we are done! Yay, yay, yay!!!! Follow our progress in Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4 and Week 5.

So without further ado, let’s begin, shall we? This post will be all about pictures. I hope to do a more detailed post with all the sources and some tutorials next week!

No makeover would be complete without some before pictures.

IMG_0329

IMG_0334

The look we were aiming for was a very white, cheery and soothing look, saying goodbye to the gold, drabby (if there is such a word!) curtains, and all the brown tones. I am so, so exited with our new look! So here it is…

IMG_0602

I love, love all the whites in our bedroom. One of my favorite features is this board and batten headboard my husband made. That man never ceases to amaze me!!! It makes such a bold statement against the grey wall and bedding.

I’m so happy how the dresser and end tables turned out. :)

IMG_0620

Remember that beautiful dated, not-so-pretty coffee table I found off our garage sale site? Well, here she is with a whole new look! I love our new bench for the foot of our bed!

IMG_0593

…. and our dresser! I keep saying I wish I would have done this a long time ago because it has made such a big difference. I especially love all the shiny, glass hardware.

IMG_0615

IMG_0657

Another favorite feature is this gallery wall! I could just lounge in this beautiful room and look at those sweet faces in the pictures all day long!

IMG_0633

And just another angle …

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Linda, our fabulous and encouraging host for this challenge! Being held accountable and having to report my progress each Thursday was just what I needed for this makeover. I am tired but happy to have “met” so many fabulous and motived DIYers through this whole challenge! And thanks to you, my wonderful readers, for following along and all the encouraging and sweet comments you’ve left for me! They mean a lot!

One Room Challenge: Week 5 …. Counting Down!

It is week 5 everybody!! Once more, welcome to my One Room Challenge update!

pin it button

I can not believe we have 1 week to go!!! This is the first time I took part in Linda’s One Room Challenge and for those of you who might not be familiar with it, you basically do one room/space makeover in 6 weeks. It’s been tons of fun and hard work…. and sanding, and sanding, and hunting for specific items, but all in all, it’s made me get off my you-know-what and get working on our badly neglected master bedroom.

And next week at this time, I will proudly show you the MAKEOVER!!!!

The biggest part of our makeover was our dresser and two end tables. This past week, rain has interrupted our plans a couple times so I’m a little behind in that. Here is my fabulous husband to the rescue, sanding away quickly before a downpour started! So thankful I can always count on him!

IMG_0540

IMG_0542

It is now already primed and I am loving the color white on it already!!! I didn’t get a picture of it in white but you’ll have to come back next week to see the transformation!

Here is the board and batten headboard all done! Another feature I am totally loving! This picture shows three of my favorite things about this makeover. The headboard, chandelier and a sneak peak of the curtains. I couldn’t take a full shot of the curtains or bed… or anything in our room for that matter, as the drawers from the dresser are all over the place and the room looks like a hurricane blew through it! Next week, though at this time..

IMG_0563

Finally, we have some lamps I love! I had found the bases for these right at the beginning of the challenge. I spray painted them white and then it was on to finding shades. I couldn’t find any I really liked and so I bought some material to cover just some plain white shades. But a couple days ago as I was looking around in Target these shades seemed to call out my name. They were grey (perfect) and kind of a woven textue (love!) and they were on clearance for super cheap! Anybody that knows me, will tell you I love, love scoring a good deal! Needless to say, I grabbed them!

IMG_0559

It’s been fun shopping for accessories and can’t wait to decorate our room! Here’s a sneakpeak of some of the items I’ve found…

IMG_0567

So, if you are looking for me this coming week, I will be no where else than right here at home! Thanks so much for coming by… I appreciate you following along and your support in this makeover!

Until next time,

Kendra

One Room Challenge: Week 4 Progress During Spring Break

Happy Thursday y’all!! Once again, welcome back to the 6 week One Room Challenge! I keep thinking to myself how happy I am to be a part of this challenge because I know without a doubt, we wouldn’t be this far along if we weren’t working on a deadline. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the ORC, you can read here about Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3.

This is our inspiration board:

inspiration board masterbed

Linda, our host, mentioned that this week can be one of the most challenging. I know what she means… so I’m not surprised as I sit here and feel like I don’t have anything huge to reveal that we did this past week. Nevertheless, there were little things that I checked off our to do list and being in the middle of spring break has kinda put things at a slower pace as well. During Easter weekend we took a mini road trip and I’m feeling a little behind now, but I sure don’t regret time spent away with my sweet family! We’ll get our workin’ boots on this weekend and hopefully show you some big and fabulous accomplishments next week!

My husband built this fabulous board and batten headboard for behind our bed. It still needs a couple coats of paint, but I thought I’d show you anyway. I am loving the way it looks already! If you remember our before pictures, our room was sooo drab looking with gold curtains and lots of brown tones and I find myself saying over and over I love how bright it’s beginning to look. Love, love all the whites!!

IMG_0509

and one more…

IMG_0514

The fabric we ordered from Tonic Living arrived this week. I was so excited to receive it…. it looks as beautiful as I pictured!

IMG_0516

Just in case you missed it last week, this is the coffee table I found at an extremely awesome price and we’re going to work some magic on this one and make it into a bench :) I am so excited about it!

IMG_0476

My big dilemma now is finding hardware for the dresser and end tables.

So …. here’s our TO DO list for this next week:

* prime dresser and end tables

* find hardware for dresser and end tables

* recover lampshades (found fabric this week!!)

* coffee table transformation to a end-0f-the-bed bench :)

* finish painting board and batten head board

* still looking for some pieces for our gallery wall, so I’m hoping this next week something jumps out at me and captures my attention)

We are getting down to the wire, friends!!! This is a project that I was totally saving for summertime …. I can hardly believe it’ll be done in a couple weeks!! Thanks so much for coming by ad following along on this fun journey!

Until next time,

Kendra

One Room Challenge: Week 3 Amazing Find & Progress Update

Welcome back friends!! We are onto week 3 of the One Room Challenge!

pin it button

Just for a quick recap, week one was all about the “Plan” for our master bedroom makeover and week 2 I showed you the “Progress”. I am still working on the sanding…. Spring has arrived to our neck of the woods which, at our home, calls for more time at the park, more bike rides and more running. I sand here and there, basically whenever I get 10 minutes of free time.

I am especially excited for this post because I found the deal of the year!!! I am sooo, so excited for the chandelier my husband found at Home Depot. It is exactly what I had envisioned for our room and the best part? The price tag!!! It was regular priced in the $90′s (can’t remember exact price) and then it was marked down to 50% and then when my husband saw them, it was$20! Yes, $20… your eyes are not playing tricks on you! We may or may not have bought more than one ;) Here’s a picture of my new favorite chandelier!!

IMG_0469

… and another shot just because I love it so much….

IMG_0465

In my plan during week 1 I mentioned I would love a bench for the foot of our bed. I looked at furniture stores and online and the ones I like were in the $500-$600 range. That is way out of our price range so I got dreaming of me my husband building one perhaps. One day I was walking out of the grocery store and there’s a bulletin board where people have ads where they are selling random things. There was a coffee table that caught my eye and it was only $15! I totally saw the potential behind it and we are going to transform it into our bench for the foot of the bed!!! I ordered the fabric from Tonic Living and now we’re just waiting for it to arrive.

IMG_0476

So that’s my deals for this week… I’m pretty exited about them! Michael’s also had an awesome 50% sale with an additional 20% coupon so I scored a few more décor items.

IMG_0472

Thanks so much everyone for stopping by… we are halfway through this challenge as off today! Spring break officially starts for us today and we don’t have too, too big of plans so I’m hoping to get lots accomplished by next Thursday. Hope you have a wonderful Easter and cherish the time you get to spend with your loved ones!

Until next time,

Kendra

EGGcellent Easter Treats

Today I want to share a super easy and quick Easter treat that I made for our kid’s teachers. I just wanted a little something for our little ones to give to their teachers as a way of saying “thanks for being a fabulous teacher!” These were quick to make and look so cute!

IMG_0423

You will need:

* Easter treats of your choice, Easter grass, little ziplock bags, and colored paper of your choice

* You will also need “You are an EGGcellent Teacher” printed for however many you are going to make.

IMG_0421

I found the pack of ziplock bags in the craft section of our dollar store. They were the perfect size to fill with some Easter grass and chocolate eggs.

First, I used my Cuttlebug and a Sizzix die to cut out the yellow and purple tags. I then folded them length-wise and glued my “You are an EGGcellent Teacher” tags on to them. I didn’t want the staples to show through my tags so I just stapled the back of the colored tags to the ziplock bags and glued the front of the tag to the back.

And there you go! A super cute lil’ Easter treat. I am planning on making more for the kid’s friends and some for our neighborhood friends that say “You are an EGGcellent neighbor”. Really, you could make them say anything… from Grandparents, to aunties, to uncles, to friends, etc. A sweet and yummy way to show someone you love them!

IMG_0429

Why not make some of these this Easter? They would be super cute in your lil’ ones Easter baskets as well! Thanks for coming by, friends!

Until next time,

Kendra

Painted Mason Jars

Hello Everyone!

Hope you’re all having a fabulous day :) It is kinda cool here today but loving how it feels springy and the grass is starting to show signs of green! Yay!!

Do you decorate much for spring? We don’t do too much, but this year I did go out and bought some hydrangea bunches and other greenery to make the house look springy and add some pops of color. After seeing mason jars popping up on Pinterest everywhere, I decided to paint my own. They are super easy to make and I thought I’d share the tutorial with you today.

IMG_0404

What you’ll need:

Quart sized jars, paint and foam brush

For paint, I used Craftsmart brand from Michaels. The little 59mL bottles were on last week for 66 cents each so I stocked up! The three colors I used for these jars are white, grey and robins egg blue.

I started painting at the bottom and then painted all the to the top, including the rim. I then let them dry completely, about 6-8hours. Waiting for them to dry is the hardest part because I wanted to get that second coat on right away. But this is very important in letting the paint harden…. ahem, I may have learned this the hard way!

IMG_0298

I gave my jars another coat after they were completely dry. Depending on the kind of paint you use, they might need a third coat or just some touch ups after the second coat. It is best to seal them with a clear coat of matte or satin sealer to prevent any chipping.

IMG_0395

I wrapped some twine around mine and filled them with some hydrangea stems. Our little ones love to bring me flowers in the summertime so these will also look great with fresh flowers as well!

Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you have a fabulous week!

Until next time :)
