Updating a Room With a Wall Mural

Adding wallpaper or a wall mural to a room is a quick and easy way to update any space!

Happy summer, friends!

Hard to believe we’re almost at the end of July! I haven’t shared here in a while but today I wanted to share a room refresh we did last week.

First, let’s chat about wallpaper. No, not the kind of stuff that’s SO hard to put on and takes hours days to remove. I’m sharing the kind that just takes a couple hours to apply and is easy to remove if you change your mind (or style) after a while 🙂 Wallpaper is such a quick way to update or add character to any room!

We had redone our daughter’s bedroom quite a few years ago and it was ready for an update. We were super excited to receive this beautiful new wall mural from PHOTOWALL. I usually never go for something as bold as this wallpaper but I let our daughter choose and I’m so happy she chose the gentle flowers wallpaper. It is stunning and is such a statement!!

There really was no prep work for applying the wall mural. I cleared the space in front of the wall, wiped it down and and went to work. Here’s how we applied the wall mural.

  • The wall mural comes in one large single roll. Once we unrolled it, you can see it has lines where you cut it. This makes it incredibly easy and saves a ton of time. We cut along every dotted line and ended up with eight “mini” rolls (pictured below). (When you place your order, you will need to add the dimensions of the wall you’re applying the wallpaper or mural to. They recommend adding an additional 6-10cm and I added 10cm when I ordered. )
  • Next, we mixed the glue that comes with the order. The directions are easy to follow and all we added was warm water. Using a paint brush, we then applied the glue to the wall where the first strip would go. (It might seem like there isn’t enough glue, but there’s plenty so apply it liberally. 🙂 )
  • We used a level to make sure the first strip would go on perfectly straight. The width of the eight wallpaper strips is 45cm so we measured 45cm over from the corner just in case our walls aren’t straight. (In our many years of DIYing we’ve learned to never assume that walls or ceilings are straight because more often than not- they’re NOT! 😉

Something we learned when applying the mural is that it’s best not to line the rolls up right at the top of the ceiling but rather, extend them higher- as shown above. When we applied the very first piece we lined the dotted lines up right at the top of the ceiling but when it came time to apply the second piece, we realized our ceiling mustn’t be completely straight so it actually didn’t line up. We removed the first piece and reapplied it higher up.

Another little piece of advice would be to make sure you use a very sharp tool for cutting the excess wallpaper off the top, bottoms and the last piece. Our blade was a little dull so some of the photo actually peeled off the paper. It’s easy enough to fix but could be avoided with a sharp cutting tool.

My husband and I couldn’t get over how easy this was to hang! It is such beautiful quality and a dream to apply! What amazes me most is that you can’t see any seams!!! (You do have to let it dry completely and wait 24 hours before seams completely disappear).

So if you’re wanting to update a room in your home definitely check out PHOTOWALL and their amazing selection!! Here are the different links to murals, wallpaper, canvas prints, framed prints or posters.
