Pick Your Pumpkin (Quick DIY Pumpkin Planter)

Hello Friends!

I have a very exciting event to share with y’all today! If you remember last month, a few of my favorite bloggy friends and I participated in The Great Crate Challenge. If you’re not familiar with this, we each bought the same item from Michaels (in that case, it was a crate) and we got our creative juices flowing. It is so fun to start out with the same thing and everyone end up with awesome different results!

So this time around, we all decided to start out with a pumpkin. A plain-Jane orange pumpkin. The possibilities were endless! Have a peek at what we came up with!!

At the bottom of this post, you’ll find links to all my friend’s blogs. Please be sure to check out their awesomeness!! I feel so lucky to be a part of such a talented group of ladies!

For my pumpkin, I decided to leave it orange. Each year, we buy a real pumpkin and hollow it out and use it for a planter for a mum plant. However, no matter what we wash the inside with, the pumpkin usually starts to rot and the mum plant is still blooming beautifully! Naturally, I decided to make my own planter using a faux pumpkin from Michaels.

Start out with a size of pumpkin of your choice. I used the tallest one, but I think I might buy the middle size out and make another one as my plant would fit the mid sized out better.

First I used a sharpie to make where I want to cut the hole.

My husband then used an exacter knife to cut the hole. This is so easy I we might be using these pumpkins to carve for jack-o-lanterns! (Kidding! Half the fun is pulling out all the seeds and stringy stuff, isn’t it?)

We bought a Mum plant from our local grocery store and after filling the bottom of the pumpkin with rocks, we set the plant in and you’re done!

Love what you did with yours! The yellow mum looks so pretty against the orange! We had some friends who never let their kids carve pumpkins. Like, never. (they said it was too messy) They always made them just paint them. I always felt kind of sorry for those kids! Lol! I agree…half the fun is pulling out all the stringy stuff! 🙂
