Framed Chalkboard (for the Kitchen)

Hello Friends!

Hope you’re all having a fabulous weekend! I don’t usually post on Saturday but today I’m teaming up with 7 other bloggers to bring you a variety of projects! It’s a monthly party where we create any DIY that was inspired from something on Pinterest and is hosted by Havalah from Sisters, What! I’ve been pinning away like crazy on Pinterest but it’s fun to be challenged to actually make something that I see on there!  I’ve kinda been obsessed with chalkboard paint for forever a long time now, so it didn’t take me any time at all to decided what I’d make!

And let me tell ya, I sat and studied many walls in our home, planning and plotting which one it would be. While we absolutely LOVE our open floor plan in our home, it also makes it kinda hard to paint one wall with chalkboard paint as they all flow together it seems. And so this idea was formed and I absolutely love how it turned out!

It was super easy to make … here’s what I used for the chalkboard: a piece of hardboard from Home Depot, Folk Art Chalkboard paint from Michaels and trim. I had everything on hand except the wood from Home Depot. It was a very large piece and was damaged on the back so I got it for $4!

The size of the wood is 30X36inches. The trim that I used was actually leftoever from when my husband built our Board and Batten Head Board for our Master Bedroom Makeover. It worked perfect for the bottom of the frame and creates a little ledge for the chalk.

I gave the frame 3 coats of paint, letting it dry completely after each coat. You can’t really tell from the picture, but the two side pieces of trim are cut at 45degree angles. I glued all the pieces of trim onto my board, and then used screws to secure it.

It’ll be so fun to write anything from my grocery list, to little notes, to schedules, to seasonal things on it!

I had a little bit of fun with it BEFORE my husband hung it…

Even our little daughter loves using it… and leaving sweet messages on it!

This is definitely one of my favorite DIY projects! I just love how the white frame makes it stand out against our walls!

And now here’s the rest of this month’s projects!

I know chalk board paint is so tempting to put everywhere but I think you were so right to keep it to a frame instead of the whole wall. Our neighbours have one wall in their kitchen done and they have chalk dust over the floor under it all the time! The frame idea is lovely, and so useful.

Thank you Julie! I never thought about all the chalk dust that has to go somewhere! The frame adds some character I think! Thanks SO much for stopping by and enjoy the rest of your weekend! 🙂

We have a thin wall that is one side of our pantry and I am thinking about painting it with chalkboard paint… I’ve been thinking about this for a year and just need to DO it. I LOVE you framed this chalkboard, it looks so clean and different then any from you’d buy at the store.

Thanks Carrie! I totally hear ya… I think about it for a year before I jump ahead and do something (in the decorating dept!) I hope you go ahead and paint it! Would love to see it!

I love this Kendra! So smart to have the frame deep enough to make a ledge. A little neighbour girl was here on the weekend and said “Wow you guys have a lot of chalkboards!”. Haha…never enough I say 🙂

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now but was never sure how to approach it. It’d be great to eliminate that whole ‘whats for dinner’ debate or the sigh of disappointment when its not what they were hoping for! I’d love for you to share a post at my Tuesday link party today, if you’re interested!

LOVE this. Looks amazing in the space and so fun for the kiddies! We had a chalkboard wall in our kitchen until we covered it with reclaimed wood and I miss it terribly!
